Choose Your Voice (CYV) has now reached over 1.2 million Canadian students, empowering them to speak out against racism, antisemitism and discrimination of all forms.  It is now available in Manitoba in either English or French. Originally designed for grades 6 - 9, the program meets many of the curriculum indicators for Social Studies and several other subject areas.   In addition, many secondary schools have used this program because the ideas, activities and resources are appropriate for many courses and easy to adapt for any level. This program was designed by curriculum experts and won the 2010 Award of Excellence from the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.

The four lessons are extremely easy to use and the DVD provides an outstanding collection of vignettes that will educate and inspire.  CYV may be downloaded, with no cost, at: www.chooseyourvoice.ca.  We can also provide, at no cost, hard copies in either English or English/French.

CYV consists of the following:

  • a Teacher's Guide with four lesson plans and 28 Fact Sheets that profile the discrimination faced historically and currently by many different minority groups and the heroes who have made a difference
  • evaluation rubrics and graphic organizers
  • a 22-minute DVD with interviews of Holocaust survivors, Rwandan genocide survivors, First Nations representatives and others.

It would be my pleasure to send kits for your review.

Systemchange.ca is an excellent collection of short videos addressing climate change, especially created for use in the lead up to, during and in the aftermath of the UN climate talks in Durban, South Africa, this November 28-December 9:

"The popular slogan: "system change not climate change" has become central to a growing and vibrant global movement for climate justice. But what does "system change" mean? And what does it have to do with the climate crisis? This project,www.systemchange.ca, features videos from a range of speakers including academics, workers and activists who address these questions, talk about why we need system change, and give examples of new ways forward.
www.systemchange.ca is a free, public, interactive website featuring over 25 videos."

Currently, the videos require internet connection to play, but there will soon be a download link.

Sir John Thompson, Our Fourth PM Died Too Young

Sir John Thompson, our fourth Prime Minister, served for two years between
1892-94. Sandwiched between the two Canadian greats, Sir John A. Macdonald
and Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Thompson is now a fascinating footnote in our history,
mainly because of how he died, rather than what he contributed while he lived.

Global Citizenship:  World Vision - Lessons and Resources - Kindergarten to Grade 8

The World Class Program

World Class is a free interactive web-based program for elementary and middle school classes. It is built on fundamental principles of global education: engage students to think critically about global issues; support and encourage them to act on new understandings; and extend their learning through reflection on the change in their values, perspectives and behaviours. World Class builds skills students need to be responsible citizens, participating in and contributing to their communities while examining the world through a social justice and sustainability lens. The learning and reflection in this program involves thinking critically about issues of fairness, equity, diversity and community life, as well as complex social and global issues. Students will ask why children go hungry in the world, do not attend school or get sick from water-borne disease. And they will want to do something about it.
